Tools for exploring
I think to explore the ocean would be a really interesting job to have since most of the ocean has not been explored. There is room for anyone interested in exploring to find something new. I would love to explore the ocean and find new things, new species. I think it is really important to be able to explore the ocean because the ocean is the majority of this planet and we should at least know what's inside it. The creatures are all beautiful and the way they work in their own ecosystems is beautiful.
Aboard a modern ship of discovery
The Okeanos Explorer works for the NOAA, it goes out into the ocean to find out new things about the ocean. It goes out to places that are already predesigned to take water samples which is called "Water Column Exploraration". This process makes the people able to know the chemicals that are in the water and other things that could be wrong with it. They pretty much just try to figure out what the ocean does to try to understand it more.
CDT
CDT means Conductivity, Depth, and Temperature. It helps scientists locate places that they want to find. It also helps them calculate water currents using conductivity and temperature to calculate the density of the current. It has many chambers on it and each chamber collects the water and stores it until it needs to be tested. The interesting part of this is the fact that we can calculate currents and have machines that test water.
SONAR
Sonar stands for Sound Navigation Ranging. A transducer transmits a sound wave into the water and the scientists measure the amount of time it takes for the sound wave to bounce back or "echo". They also measure the strength of that echo and that can determine how hard the object is that the wave is bouncing off of. This is all called active sonar. Passive sonar is when you listen to the marine life making noises in the water. A multi-beam sonar transmits multiple sonars in to the water and is frequently used.
Underwater Robots
There are two types of underwater robots, ROV's (Remotely operated vehicles) and AUV's (Autonomous underwater vehicles). Underwater robots have the following systems: Power, propulsion, communication, buoyancy control, navigation, & information gathering. ROV's have more systems for example the cutting arm and AUV's are able to cover a lot of land. You can also send information to the AUV's where as with the ROV's you are controlling them by hand.
Telepresence
The telepresence is a room where many people or in this case, scientists, can look at a screen that shows the progress or what the people are doing out in the ocean. It is changing the way exploration is done because now people can just send the ROV's or the AUV's out into the ocean and just sit and watch what the machine is doing.
